About us

Gethsemane Lutheran Church is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  We have been part of the St. Bernard community since 1961.  After Katrina, the decision was made by members of the congregation to rebuild and continue the work of God here in this place.

We are also part of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod.  Our Mission: To Make Disciples. Our Strategy: To equip congregations by equipping congregational leaders.  Our Vision:  A network of growing, Christ-centered, outwardly-focused congregations passing the faith to the next generation.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in American is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with more than 3.7 million members in more than 9,300 congregations across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of "God's work. Our hands," the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA's roots are in the writings of the German church reformer, Martin Luther.
